Dyeabolical: A Review of Pound Ridge Country Club, Pound Ridge, NY
Nested in the quaint town of Pound Ridge, New York lies Pound Ridge Country Club, a beautifully designed Pete Dye gem located just outside of the Big Apple. The course is an 18-hole public track that plays approximately 7,200 yards from the back tees. The course is Pete Dye's first and only design in the state of New York.
Pete Dye is considered one of the most famous golf course designers of all-time and he did not disappoint when designing Pound Ridge. The Tipsy Golfer Team had the chance to play at Pound Ridge in July. The course takes tee times 5 days in advance. This is important because tee times fill up almost immediately. They have an online booking system that lets you book starting at 10PM five days in advance. We were able to book around 10PM on a Monday night for a Saturday morning tee time.
Although Pound Ridge is a public course, it is in spectacular condition. The fairways, greens and bunkers are all very well maintained. Even with the extreme heat we have had recently, the course has kept its bright green color. The greens are tricky but not as quick as the practice green. Before our round, we took some putts on the practice green and our balls were flying passed the hole. But, once we got out onto the course, this was not the case. We adjusted accordingly and this was not an issue but just something that we noted.
The course overall is tons of fun. But do not be fooled: Pound Ridge Country Club is TOUGH. We had never played the course before and there is definitely an element of target golf that Dye built into this course. There are certain spots on different holes where the fairway runs out or the fairway just drops off into an abyss of bunkers that are very difficult to escape from. But, we found it best to try to keep our ball straight and in play as much as possible. If you are at Pound Ridge and you do not know what is ahead of you or cannot see it, do not go for it. Sometimes laying up, as much as it hurts us to say this, can definitely save your round at Pound Ridge. The key to scoring well here is to play safe, keep your ball in play and to leave the yips at home!
And finally, do we think the price to play PRCC is justified for the experience you get at this course. To ride in a cart for 18 holes it costs ~$220 per person. So for a foursome, it is a fairly expensive round! But, overall I would say it is worth it. Although the driving range is a tad small, the course itself is phenomenal. Pete Dye did not disappoint and the crew at PRCC do a really nice job of keeping the course in great shape. If you are in the northeast, we highly recommend Pound Ridge, and hopefully the Tipsy Golfer Team will come back to play it soon.
